What treatments are available?

Saxenda® is used for weight loss in addition to diet and exercise in adults aged 18 and above who have

a BMI of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity) or
a BMI of 27 kg/m² and less than 30 kg/m² (overweight) and weight-related health problems (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal levels of fats in the blood or breathing problems during sleep called ‘obstructive sleep apnoea’).

Wegovy® is for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (excess weight) (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems to help them lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy® should be used with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

How does the treatment work?

Saxenda® and Wegovy works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce your body weight. GLP-1s have many other benefits including but not limited to decrease in blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol.

What if the treatment doesn't work?

The medication isn’t the magic bullet. You will need to commit to a healthy lifestyle and diet but by placing measurable objectives you can hit the desired weight you are happy with. Make sure you read the patient information leaflet carefully as there may be hints and tips on how to use your medication correctly or feel free to call us for some advice. However, there can be occasions where the treatments don’t work or suit you. In this case we recommend you contact your GP at your earliest opportunity for further advice.
